Second floor landing is looking better

April 16th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Our house is lathe and plaster. At least it is in parts that haven’t been renovated yet.

If you’ve lived in old houses then chances are you’ve experienced its joys. Constant cracking, no insulation behind it, etc… Some people like the character. For us, (after spending this kind of money and putting in this amount of time on renovations) we want the walls to be crack-free.

As we renovate we are pulling it out wherever possible. What a messy job…let alone what it does to the local landfill (on the flip side the energy savings of insulation are well worth it).

When we took on this renovation we knew we wanted to address the cracking of the lathe and plaster up on the second floor landing and hallway, and the staircase up to the third floor. The cracking was really bad and somewhere along the way they decided to paint some wallpaper that was on there giving it some GREAT texture!

Because they are not exterior walls we decided to simply sheathe 1/4 inch drywall over top of the lathe and plaster. We had heard of others who had taken this approach and thought is was a good solution. Ben put up all of the drywall, Dan taped and mudded it, and our new favorite painter Jim is now painting it. What a difference!

Here’s how it is looking thus far:
