Our basement tile selection

February 22nd, 2009 · 6 Comments

Have you ever attempted to source material for your renovation with two kids under four in tow? Fun is not the word. We’ve made several trips to tile stores, bathroom stores, and big box stores with the kids. It usually ends in crying (not always by the kids) and a general sense of frustration.

The pressure of making good decisions (both stylistically and financially) is made infinitely more difficult when you have the needs of your kids to deal with. But today we had a good day. We spent two hours at Olympia tile and we alternated with one of us giving snacks, colouring or playing hide and seek with the kids.

We think we’ve found our tiles for the basement bathroom. Here they are:

Tiles for the basement

The grey tile is for the floor. The white oversize subway tile is for the majority of the shower walls and the ceiling, the blue glass mosaic is for the back wall of the shower, and the white hexagon tiles are for the shower floor. Outside of the shower we’ll be sticking with drywall and paint to keep costs down.

    Hi there,

I see your choice of tiles. I used the hexagon on my bathroom floor. Note: these are very tricky to install. You need to use a professional if you are not intending to already. They look fantastic if they are installed correctly, but they are flimsy to work with. With regard to the grey floor tiles — depending on the size of your floor I would suggest not using those tiles. Frankly, they are uninspiring. If it is a small floor, the hexagons will look amazing - use those on the main floor and then use the grey ones in the shower (as they won’t be so in-your-face. In the shower, you need to think not only of the beauty of the tiles, but also the design. You’re suggesting to have one back wall in blue. I would recommend using the blue at the top half, above eye level, with a border (white with a design, Olympia tile has nice ones) at eye level, and then the white tiles at the bottom part of the shower. Since you are taking the trouble to renovate, I think it is best to consider a bit more the design side of things. You have chosen lovely tiles (except for the grey floor tiles), so I would recommend paying attention to design.

    Best,

    Yolanda

OK. I see now that you have already started. It is looking great. Sorry for my out-of-date comments made earlier.

How do you like the hexagonal tiles? I was thinking about putting them on the floor of my future kitchen. Are they easy to keep clean?

    Hi Lindsey

That’s a good question. They are more difficult to clean then I would have hoped. Also they are expensive to lay down since they are so intricate. Don’t think I’d recommend them for your kitchen floor but that could be just me.

Hi Lindsey- That was Kirk’s take- I agree that they’re tricky to clean however we used really small hexagons. You’ll have less of an issue if you use a larger tile…
