The guys from Absolute came back as promised on Wednesday. They dug out the trap that was underneath our front porch and replaced it. They added a venting system that now allows for the city or a private company to come and stick a camera into the pipes to inspect for damage.
The total cost was $2,000 plus GST. As mentioned in previous posts the City of Toronto has a grant whereby we will receive the $2,000 back given that we live on a tree-lined street. We now have to fill out the paperwork (all of it given to us by the guys at Absolute to make it easy) and mail it in. I’m told to expect the grant in 4-6 weeks.
It was a complete hassle to have this happen but it’s good to know that we are getting all of these core issues in the house (wiring, plumbing, boiler, etc…) fixed so that long-term the house will be in good shape.

Hi ya. Glad to see you are still posting!
I had the same issue w/ our pipes (except we were/are installing a washroom in the basement, and replacing the drains throughout!). Anyways, my point was, the turn around time for the grant was just shy of 8 weeks.. and that was back in September.. Just an FYI

and by same issues, I mean tree roots/etc. We have pictures of the pipes (the old ones were clay), and it’s terrifying to think what might have been if we had finished the bathroom without replacing the drains.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience regarding the timing of the cheque. I guess I should minimize my expectations!
We are planning on doing what you describe i.e. changing our drains before we finish the basement (when we get to it). I think our existing piping is in the same shape as yours.
Happy Holidays.
