We were hoping today to finish the deck and cross that one completely off the to-do list. Unfortunately it rained heavily all day and thus we had to move our work day indoors.
It gave us the chance to begin framing and insulating the old upstairs kitchen and move it a little bit closer to the tv room / den that we have planned for it.
While I was playing daddy day care Ben made a run to Home Depot for lumber and insulation and then began framing the west wall. When I was finally able to lend a hand he had the wall completely up. We then insulated it with R14 and added Safe and Sound insulation to the ceiling. I really wanted that Safe and Sound insulation so that the noise from the tv and movies wouldn’t drift upstairs to our daughter’s room.
We also pre-wired the ceiling for the two speakers that I am going to add once the drywall goes up.
All in all we got a lot done today. We still have to frame and insulate the southern wall (once the new window goes in) and then move to adding a vapor barrier and then the drywall.

It looks like you reframed that wall. What wood did you use? I assume since it’s R14 you used 2×4. Also, this might be a good time to add telephone, cable, and electrical outlets on those walls (while you have it open).

Hi Leon
Yes we went with 2×4 since we weren’t worried about losing a little bit of space in that room and wanted to make sure it was nice and strong.
Good idea re: phone, cable and outlets. We’re running cable to the inner wall since that’s where we’re going to put the tv. We have VOIP phone and wireless internet so I won’t be running phone lines anywhere in that room but should definitely run an outlet!
More to come as we progress. As always, thanks for your comments.

You really should spray foam your walls. The provincial and federal energy saving rebates make a big difference and with rising heating and cooling costs it makes even more sense.
There’s a product I’m installing during my reno called Retro Foam www.retrofoam.com

Thanks for your comment (and plug for the website) A.L. While it may be that you’re sneaking a link in…we’ll leave it since you’re right about spray foam. We just don’t have the budget for it in that room. The government grants cover regular insulation as well.

Hi there. See our post on this subject at http://www.247reno.ca/2007/10/30/ecoenergy-retrofit-grant/
Insulation is one of the areas in which you can qualify for government grants. Good luck!

I’m Impressed, it’s always great to see people take the initiative and work with contractors on home renovations. It’s an affective way to save on costs. http://www.barrettrenovations.com/
