Masonry work on the back of the house

July 18th, 2008 · 3 Comments

One of the big tasks that we’ve had hanging over us was to replace the old second floor door (that used to walk out to a second floor deck on top of the crummy extension) with a window.

It’s a big job since it requires a mason to remove bricks from the top of the old door (in order to add a lentil) and add bricks to the bottom of it. All of this in order to fit a large, custom window that we had ordered from Dennis Windows.

We used a new mason for this job since we liked his quote and his commitment to do the job right. His company name is Chris Jemmett Masonry (416-686-8095). We had a good meeting about how he would handle the job and felt confident in his abilities. He was also very reasonable in terms of his rate.

Chris came on Tuesday and finished today. The work he’s done looks great and he and his associate were meticulous in terms of cleanliness. It’s amazing how few contractors are like that and what a nice thing it is when it happens!

The window should go in this weekend so we’re excited!

Here’s the new hole in the back of the house to fit the window:

Curious to know/see if you plan on cleaning up the other brick and how you go about doing it.

We’ve just finished the outside of our 3 storey reno in the west end. We have some patches if paint and other strange substances on the brick and would like to clean it somehow.

    Good question Stef.

We need tuck pointing on the entire back wall of the house. There are lots of holes and trouble spots everywhere. We just couldn’t commit the budget to it right now.

So to answer your question we plan on simply getting it all done at the same time next year by a professional.

I have heard though that you can take a wire brush to the brick to remove water stains / paint etc… But I cannot tell you 100% that it works since I have not tried it.

Good luck with your continued renovations.

If you are ionterested in getting this done, I own a masonry restoration company just north of Toronto, but would be more then happy to come done and give you a quote and discuss the project you have facing you. Be careful with your wirebrush a lot of old brick has very soft surface and scratch marks may be seen. Jason
