Re-finishing the main floor staircase

April 10th, 2008 · 5 Comments

One of the areas that we’ve been happy with is the changes that we’ve made to the main floor staircase.

Here’s an old photo of how it looked before. You’ll notice that there was a wall between the staircase and the rest of the main floor (because it was seperated into two apartments). It was also covered in brutal old carpet and we didn’t know what was underneath.

The old main floor staircase

We were able to pull up the old carpet and find oak underneath that was in reasonable shape. Danny from Capital Floors had his team re-finish the steps. A couple of them have small cracks in them but we’ll live with that.

From there Darren painted all of the risers and did a great job spraying all of the trim, banister and spindles. We’re still thinking of adding a carpet runner at some point when we can afford it.

Here it is now:

Would you mind sharing the paint colour you chose for the treads?

Glorious! That’s exactly how I painted/finished our stairs. The old owner though dark purple looks better than white. It took 4 coats of paint to get rid of the purple!

    Hi Lisa

The treads are not painted they are re-finished oak wood in a dark walnut stain. But whoever you use to re-finish them can show you some colour tests. Different woods will show stains differently. Sorry if I am telling you something you already know. Good luck with your renos.

What was the cost to get your stair done?
