This past weekend my good friend Ben came over to lend a helping hand AGAIN. We tore apart the second floor kitchen and added to the junk pile in our backyard.
The demolition went well and luckily it was a beautiful day so we were able to move a lot of the cupboards and the stove to the end of our parking pad. As is usually the case with items that are in reasonable condition they were promptly scooped up which is obviously so much better then the landfill.
One of the cupboards though (where the sink was located) was very rotten. There was no way it was going to be picked up so out the back door it went. You might remember that the second floor kitchen door used to lead to a deck that we ripped down since it was on top of a crummy addition that needed to be removed before the french doors could go in. Therefore the second floor door leads to a two-story fall down to the backyard. Handy though to push things out of! Since the backyard is already filled with junk from tearing down the addition it was mighty convenient.
We hummed and hawed over the old fridge. I thought somebody would take it but when we opened it the stench was just too much. Once again it was filled with mold (as it was when we moved in) and I didn’t want to spend three hours again cleaning it. Plus it was on a huge tilt since it had been help up by wood and the front and sides were covered in rust.
So out the back door it went.
Here’s what the old kitchen room looks like now empty:
Now though I’m disappointed in myself since I’ve heard about “The Great Refrigerator Roundup”. It’s a great program run by the Ontario Power Authority to recycle old fridges (10+ years old). The goal is to take old fridges off the grid since new ones are two to three times more efficient.
In order to qualify you have to be able to plug in your fridge and prove that it works. So I’m going to run a power cord out to the backyard and see if I can qualify. It will obviously be so much better if I can get it disposed off in the proper manner.

I’m so happy I stumbled across this post — my own discovery today about Sony products (http://blog.homerenovationguide.com/2008/04/10/appliance-recycling/) put me into a definite spring cleaning state of mind. I literally had no idea the Ontario government had so many options in place for recycling, and then thanks to you, came across this other great site: www.everykilowattcounts.ca I foresee a future where my mini-fridge doesn’t merely collect dust in the corner of my apartment. Thanks!

Hi Rebecca. I’m happy we could help. Certainly I’m thrilled that the fridge that I was going to junk will now be dealt with appropriately.

Thanks for the tip. The home we moved into this past Fall has an old chest freezer in the cold room under the backyard deck. It’s now on the “list”.

I remember our pile like that - it was horrendous! You will be so relieved to have it gone!
