Installing the Carrera marble backsplash

March 20th, 2008 · 15 Comments

When we were moving from our old house we were introduced to a fantastic tiler named Harold (no website - phone is 416-801-6961). He did a great job on a short timeline getting our downstairs bathroom completed.

We called him about installing our new backsplash and he was able to meet our timeline. As you know we have gone with the carrera marble in a subway tile pattern.

Today he came in and began the installation since we had been waiting for the counters to be installed.

We’re now just waiting for the counter guys to come back tomorrow to remove the small section they had inserted behind the range so Harold can finish the last row of tiles and finalize the grout.

You can see the almost-done backsplash in these two photos (in two different lights so you can see the colours):

I stumbled across your site as I was researching backsplash tile for an upcoming project. What a great local resource!

Just wondering if you’d be willing to share your costs for the tile job (labour costs versus materials)? I’m debating whether to tackle this myself or hire out. Thanks!

    Hi Reagan

Thanks for the compliment. We’re having fun with the blog.

Here is a breakdown of the cost: about $350 in marble (from Saltillo) at something like $16.99 for a sheet which is about 1.3 square feet. In total we bought 26 square feet of material for a 24 square foot space (it’s a small backsplash).

Our tiler Harold (416-801-6961) charged us $650 for the installation. He’s done a great job.

I hope that helps. Good luck with your project!

Nice looking backsplash! Will have to give Harold a call about tiling our bathroom. Was it an overly complicated installation? $650 seems like a lot to install 24 square feet of tile.

It was a little expensive for sure when you look at it as a cost per square foot formula. The issue is that it still requires three or four trips in order to do it properly so the time is almost the same as if it was 50 square feet.

We were ok with the price given the quality of work.

True true - no question about that. Same goes for drywall I’ve found in the past. No question the finished product looks like it was worth every penny.

Thanks Kirk & anke! I think I’m going to tackle this one myself…seems like a time consuming job moreso than a difficult one (from my research, at least). * fingers crossed * Will definitely have to visit Satillo. Cheers!

Well, I met with Harold yesterday on my bathroom reno (10×8 main bath, full gut to the studs/joists reno) and am planning on having him do the marble floor. Would love to see hi-res closeups of the marble backsplash. How much of a grout line did you leave for it?

    Hi Tim

Send us an email to 247reno@gmail.com and we will reply with a high-res image for you. No problem.

Would you be interested in sharing your before and after photos of your bathroom with our community? If so, send your before images to the same email and add the after shots once complete.

hi kirk, the backsplash looks great. what countertop did you use?

    Hi Alex,

We went with a Caesarstone counterop in stone gray and absolutely love it. It looks great with the carrera marble and is really durable.

I love your kitchen do you have any more pictures. This is exactly what I am thinking of doing. I’d all love to see more pictures of the rest of your house.

    Hi Jody,

Thanks for your comments. We’ve posted a few more pictures of our kitchen on the site- check under all the posts that are tagged with kitchen and see if you can find them. It’s not an overly large space but we love the layout and flow of it- it totally works for our family. The 8 1/2 ft island is really key!

    Good luck, Anke

I have my father in law (very kind hard working fella) installing our carrera marble mosaic backsplash. He is having problems with the pieces falling off of the mesh backing if he uses a wet saw and also problems with the edges splintering. Does anyone out there know the secret to carerra marble tile cutting? and what about pointers to grout and not have problems with scratching the surface? any information would be greatly appreciated.
