New hardwood on the second level

November 12th, 2007 · 2 Comments

We finally got some immediate gratification today! Capital Floor came in to start re-finishing the hardwood floor on the second level. They made great progress. They completed the sanding, replaced some of the wood in a couple areas where it was damaged, and put on the first coat of stain.

We chose a medium Dark Brown stain with a satin finish. Here are a couple of photos showing the process. Stains will take differently depending on what type of wood your floors are ie. the den and bedroom are both white oak and the hall is red oak so the colours will read slightly different. We spent some time today testing out the stains on a sanded patch of floor to determine which one we liked best. The whole process will take 4 days and nothing can be done on the main floor or anywhere else in the house for that matter to prevent any dust from sticking to the fresh floors.

Hi - I have to ask…how are your floors holding up? We had Capital do our floors in Jan 2008 and they are proving to be a complete disaster. Just wondering if you had any of the same problems we are experiencing. We had the main floor sanded and refinished to match the new hardwood we had them install in the kitchen. Over the summer, the old floors, which were beautiful when we bought the house have cupped and buckled and splintered beyond recognition. Now the newly installed floors are starting to cup. Neighbors used Capital too (they saw the van infront of our place) and the same thing is happening to them. Not sure where we are going to go with this but it sure smells fishy. We have a hardwood floor inspector coming to see what might have gone wrong and who is to blame. Any thoughts? Cindy

That’s awful Cindy! So sorry to hear that your floors turned out that way.

We fortunately haven’t had any issues so far. In November 2007 we had them refinish our beautiful old hardwood on our 2nd floor and in Feb 2008 they laid new hardwood on our main floor because the old couldn’t be salvaged as well as re-finished our stairs.

We know several other people that have used them and they haven’t had any issues either. I’ll let you know if we hear of anything.

    Best of luck!
