Asbestos Removal Quote

November 4th, 2007 · 5 Comments

Sean Fisher of Fisher Environmental Ltd. popped by on Saturday to take a look at the asbestos wrapped around some of our pipes in the basement. He quoted us $1000 + gst for the removal. We had budgeted $2000 so it’s nice to see some things come in under!

He came by in the midst of the demolition and commented to Kirk that since we’re clearly not advserse to doing work ourselves that we could remove the asbestos if we wanted to. You simply have to drench it with water so that none of the dust particles will fly around and remove it. I still say no thanks! They ofcourse undertake a much more careful procedure where by the asbestos is contained at all times with plastic and they go in with gloves hence the cost…

Hi there - our home inspector told us that we have ’suspected asbestos’ (he said they are unable to ever say for absolute certain that it is). Did you get someone in to test whether yours was really asbestos before contracting for removal, or did your contractor do that part too?

    Hi Sarah

Our inspector said the same thing. We had it all removed just in case. A lot of it was horse hair - but some of it was asbestos. We were happy to have it all out and have the peace of mind.

    Good luck with yours.

Hello. When my hubby and I had reno done in our home. My hubby, who’s job is to identify environment hazards, found asbestos wrapped our heating ducts. It looks like thick white/beige paper. Our steps taken were, have contractors spray it down with water. Wrap it in plastic. Duct tape it to seal. Using manual cutting tools where taped down with duct tape is preferable as this would produce less asbestos dust in air. The whole point of this is to NOT create asbestos dust. And wear mask (regulation dictates that it should be better than the usual stuff you can get at hardware stores). Let the disposal people know what it is before they haul it away. These are just steps we took, this is NOT read, nor pre-approved by an environmental expert (nor my hubby), I just thought I will share my experience for those that may be considering doing it themselves.
