Window Quote

October 31st, 2007 · 7 Comments

As promised, Spencer dropped off our quote for the new Gentek windows and double french doors with transom for the back of the house. To replace all 26 windows of various sizes and install the french doors the quote came in at $19036.24.

Kirk and I went through all of the rooms and decided to cut out 5 of the windows since we will be renovating different areas of the house like the second floor bathroom, laundry room and what is now the 2nd floor kitchen at a later time. It would be pointless to replace the windows now when we might reconfigure the rooms. This will bring us in closer to our budget of $17,500 for all windows and doors.

We also realized that we need to choose a different trim colour for the exterior side of the windows. They come in basic white and wouldn’t look good with the red brick exterior. Spencer dropped off all of the possible paint chip colours to choose from- price varies from $75 to $125 per window depending on the colour. We need to choose a style and colour to replace our front door as well (cost wasn’t factored into this quote).

I’m also still debating style… the front of the house windows definitely need a simple detail ie. grid to make them stand out/ keep in style with the era of the home.

Thanks Ron. It’s been fun documenting the process so far. We take posession tomorrow so that’s when the real challenge will begin!

Recently stumbled upon your blog. Fantastic house you’ve purchased and your renovation plans sound great. It looks like you did a really nice job on your old place. For your upcoming demo, have you thought about salvaging and donating or selling the original trim, doors and windows?

It’s great that you found us. Thanks for your comment. I was actually just about to write a post re: your question. I went to the Door Store to discuss selling some of the original windows, light fixtures etc. We tried to keep the baseboards and window trim on the main floor but apparently it won’t work if we’re insulating and drywalling…

Hi Anke. I too have stumbled across your blog and read it daily which I look forward to hearing about your experiences and the suppliers you’ve chosen as we are also undergoing the same process. Our first major reno so it’s great to compare what you are encountering too….don’t spare any details! You did a lovely job on your previous home. Thanks.
